Department of Urban Planning Overview
The Department of Urban Planning, formerly known as the Division of Urban Planning, is one of the university’s long-standing units closely associated with the establishment of the Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture (since 1975). Over more than 50 years, the Department has affirmed its pioneering role in training high-quality human resources for the fields of urban planning, urban management, and landscape architecture in Vietnam.
- 1975 – 1993: Established from the Division of Urban Planning, focusing on professional training in planning for Architecture and Construction disciplines;
- 1993 – 1998: Began offering the Urban Planning program with cohort QH93; first official student intake in 1994 (cohort QH94);
- 2002 – 2013: Diversification of academic programs: In 2002, the Department expanded to include Urban Engineering (later developed into a separate faculty in 2009); the Landscape Architecture program officially enrolled its first cohort in 2013 (KC13), completing a multidisciplinary education system within the built environment field.
- 2004 – Present: In 2004, a significant milestone was marked when the University and the Department developed an innovative training program based on European standards through the UEPP-VN project, with support from the European Union (EU). This led to the first reformed Urban Planning program (QHĐT 06) in 2006, later upgraded to a High-Quality Program (QHCLC19) in 2019, and further developed into an International-Oriented Program in 2026.
